The House That Jack Built, CALDERDALE, West Yorkshire

For 200 years, until 1974, this was known as the Shoulder of Mutton.

The stone blocks of which it's constructed are angled to throw off the water; there's also an unusual iron ring on the wall where you can tie up your dog.

Rebuilt by Jack Brook, who gave the pub its new name, it's now a cozy single-roomed local with a stone vaulted ante-chamber.

Always offering a friendly welcome, it's popular with families and can get quite lively in the evening when the younger people arrive.
